Hello and a couple questions
« on: July 30, 2009, 02:49:35 PM »
I just ordered a 250S yesterday - may be here (Idaho) next week!  I am very excited to see and ride it!  I currently own an Aprilia 200 Scarabeo and plan on keeping it for another year or so before I try and sell it.  I am interested in the Givi 438A large windscreen for the new scooter - I have a tall windscreen for my Aprilia and it is very nice in the winter time (I take it off in the summer).  Has anyone tried to put this on their scooter??  I get various responses when I investigate it.  The dealer in SLC said it would fit and held one up to the scooter, but I didn't pay close attention to the mounting - was too engrossed in how nice it looked.  Some sites say that there is some interference from the turn signals, and they need to be modified/moved.  Any info on this issue would be appreciated.  I also see a taller windscreen for 60 bucks sold by Kymco as an accessory - no hand protection - anyone use this one and what do you think of it?

Also, when I pick up the scooter I will have about a 30 mile ride home on some old highway.  Any breaking suggestions for this ride and future use?

I enjoy discussing scooter topics and problems a lot - but I don't see any forums that are real active discussing this scooter.  This form seems to be the most active, but it only has 3 pages - so I am guessing there is not a lot going on here.  Anyone know of other forums I might want to join?

You made a good choice. the P-250s is a great scooter. It's difficult NOT to go fast. It's smooth and runs very well, and I think the variator has the perfect weight rollers/ratios for take-off and cruise speeds. It's hard to believe the engine isn't a 400cc . There is a post with a downloadable service manual on this P-250 sector. I like to use full synthetic oils and premium fuel. I've done a few small modifications (#1157 LED brake/tail light, #194 park and lic plate light, and # ? in the  pet carrier), harness wiring for a battery tender, drink holder under the seat. I think this is a great machine. I hope you like yours. I marked my throttle grip at idle,1/2 and WOT so I could see what throttle position for break in, and cruise, etc. I took it easy for the first 600 or so miles. Typically I am at 1/4 to 1/3 throttle at approx 55-65 mph/flat road, and I get 60-70 mpg. Have fun!

Top speed on it is around an indicated 90mph if riding solo.  At the first 300 miles, I tried to keep it at or under 1/2 top speed. So about 45mph indicated.  You should also vary the throttle and speed quite a bit, dont sit and cruise at the same speed for extended periods.  After 300mi I started inching up on the top speed to around 3/4 occasionally (~60mph) with a wide-open-throttle for very short periods on occasion.  Then between the 500 and 620mi mark, I would give it a little wide open throttle a little more frequently and allow the top speed to go to the max a bit.  I dont think that its a good idea to use fully synthetic on the engine oil (gear oil may be ok) until the engine has been broken in or it will not seat properly.  Enjoy the scoot!

EEmicheal83 is right, I did not start using synthetic oil untill the 3nd oil change, to give the rings time to seat. I also rode mine home at about 45mph, varying the throttle (speed up/slow down) for at least the first 600 miles-then I changed the oil. I think it's important to let the various parts seat in in the engine before you start running it harder. I have had good results taking it somewhat easy at first on the 30+ bikes and scooters I've owned.

Any recommendations on motor oil to use during breaking period?  I'll switch to synthetic latter on.

I think a good 10w-40 petroleum oil like Castrol will work fine. If your concerned about the 15w-40 number--- don't. If you really feel its important, then use Shell 15w-40 oil for Diesel trucks. it's the right grade designation (SJ or SL). Just don't use the energy conserving 5W-30 stuff. Threads on oil stir up alot of people.  ...Just my 2 cents. hope you enjoy your scooter.

I've been using the Honda 10W40 GN4 mineral oil in mine.  This is what was recommended by my dealer.  Motul is also a good (but expensive) brand.
