handle bar cover removal
« on: August 11, 2013, 03:24:21 PM »
For those who have removed the handle bar cover on the GT, how did you get the mirrors off?.
I have many sockets and cannot find one that will fit in the hole where the mirror nut is.
Also, does the mirror nut/bolt have right hand threads?.

If it's anything like the setup on the xc500, you may need to modify a socket. I needed to tighten the nut and while I had a mini-socket that would fit the nut, the recess in the mirror stalk was too small to fit the socket around the nut.

I fitted the socket into a drill chuck and held a file against it until the socket was slimmed down enough to go into the recess and grip the nut. If you can find a tool store that still sells box wrenches in that size instead of having switched completely to selling sets of mini-sockets that would work too, because they typically are lower profile than sockets.

Thanks for the ideas.
I had already ground a socket to fit the mirror holding nut. When I try to loosen it, it feels like both ends are turning so I stopped.
Was afraid I might screw something up.
Got to wondering if it had left handed threads.

I noticed in your picture the mirror was still in place with the cover removed. Wish I could do that with the GT as all I want is to have access to the brake resivoirs

The tools that came on my DT worked just fine for tightening the Mirror.
