Hesitates when starting then suddenly takes off
« on: August 20, 2013, 02:53:37 PM »
Hey,

Just picked up a 2008 S9 with 233km.  Just ran it for the first time and was having a problem with it hesitating when I would give it the gas.  A some point it would start and then suddenly it would accelerate quickly.  At one point it stalled until I figured out how to accelerate.

Is this normal for this type of scooter ?  It also seems to be burning a lot of oil to the point that I am blowing smoke from the muffler.

Any advice would help.

Is the bike fully warmed up? If not, does the bike seem easier to ride after a few minutes of gentle riding?

..if the scoot has been sitting for a long while, you can expect smoke, and stalling...etc...

...drain fuel, add new fuel...CLEAN FUEL...not from dirty can...

..verify you have coolant, 2t oil,...... and ride it....

..ride it until it quits smoking...it will stop smoking....most likely...

..inspect the water pump's weep hole frequently on a lc scoot that has been idle for a year or so...

Thanks for all the replies,

I was thinking about changing the gas so I will do that for sure.

While riding another thought occurred to me.  I normally ride an 84 Honda Nighthawk so I was think that the hesitation I am speaking about is actually the automatic transmission winding up?

The bike was a better ride in the afternoon after work and my expectations of the scooter taking off from a stand still were a little tempered.

But i know my Honda Areo 80 did the same thing when cold
and so does my super 9
feather it for the first few minutes, mine seems MUCH better when warmed up
goes like snot then ! (for a 50cc scooter anyway ;))

You can't expect too much from these little scoots, clean and gap your spark plug and be sure to warm the bike up for five mins prior to riding. Two strokes can feel a bit " fluffy" for the first five mins of riding, but after this they should rev like hell.  Expect smoke, stinky strokers always have some smoke. Buy yourself some nice castor based two stroke oil, it's expensive but smells great. Alternatively a nice semi synthetic motul oil will keep your scoot running nicely

..well, that's an understatement...

..especially when referencing the super 9...

mine has done it since i have had it. although i have controlled it adjusting the mixture screw, but i can more "feel" the right ratio in the throttle. Just ease on the throttle slowly, and feed it at the greatest rate to power "feel" possible. if there is a better solution, or really correct answer i would love to know it. good Luck
